‘Secret Diary Of An American Cheerleader’ Gets Fierce In Second Season

What would you expect from a show named Secret Diary Of An American Cheerleader? If you guessed teenage appeal, a healthy helping of angst, and plenty of gravity-defying action, you’re right on the money. It’s a show about teenage girls starring teenage girls and most certainly intended for teenage girls.

After a highly successful first season, Secret Diary recently started its second go-round on a self-titled YouTube feed produced by the Cheer Channel. The show follows a cheer squad, the Texas Twisters, as they prepare for another big tournament. It’s not out of line to call it the Glee of competitive cheerleading. Though there are short scenes featuring actual performances, the focus is on the drama-filled lives of the girls who make up the squad. In the first episode, we also meet “The Fierce One”, a mysterious rabble-rouser who is basically the cheerleading version of a Die Hard

villain.

Given the adolescent themes and targeted soundtrack choices, Secret Diary is reminiscent of some of Awesomeness TV‘s offerings and it would not be out of place on the YouTube Original Channel. Nonetheless, it has attracted an Awesomeness-sized audience on its own homepage, where season one drew more than a million-and-a-half views across all platforms.

Secret Diary moves along at a very brisk pace, with no shot lingering for more than a couple seconds. This is a far cry from Stanley Kubrick, but somehow I don’t see a lot of teenage girls taking an interest in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Secret Diary hits its target and hits it well, ensuring season two will draw in another large audience.
