Miss Old School MTV? Skrillex, Diplo, And A-Trak Have You Covered

With more than 3.4 million subscribers, Skrillex is one of the five most popular musicians on YouTube. The dubstep DJ is hoping his immense popularity will turn a new channel into YouTube gold. He has started the Potato channel, which hopes to emulate the programming and sensibilities of old-school MTV, alongside fellow electronic musicians Diplo and A-Trak.

Potato lives on YouTube on a channel called POTATOwillEATyou, which perfectly exemplifies the aggressive nature of the programming that will populate it. The first show to debut is called BANG!, and it features top electronic artists give their views on the burgeoning industry. Blow Your Head, another upcoming series, follows Diplo as he tours the world.

Potato hopes to look and feel like the MTV that the channel’s creators grew up with. According to

the founding trio, the spud-themed station will “bring back the spirit of early music television for the digital and mobile era.” While that’s all well and good, something tells me that Potato’s main draw is less about bringing back a bygone era and more about JGUG GUG WUUUUUUHHHHH SCREEEEEEEE WUB WUB WUB.

Eventually, Potato will have more than five programs up and running, if its introductory video is to be believed. The channel is run in part by IconicTV, the company that also runs Jay-Z’s Life + Times YouTube Original Channel. In many ways, Potato, with its highly-polished content and regular programming schedule, seeks to emulate YouTube’s collection of curated channels. In an environment saturated with EDM hubs, Potato will need that professional sheen to put itself a cut above the channels that are, well, filmed with a potato.
