Vanilla Ice, Shontelle, Boyce Avenue, Soulja Boy Rock The Streamys

We devoted much space leading up to the Streamy Awards to the various musical acts who were slated to perform at the show. I spoke of how great it was to see the spirit of collaboration–a spirit that fuels so much web video content–extend to the mainstream music industry and the Streamys. Sure enough, the musical guests put on a hell of a performance, with Vanilla Ice‘s spectacle at the end of the show serving as a highlight for many attendees and viewers (and even the host himself

).

During the supporting acts, Shontelle, Boyce Avenue, and Soulja Boy celebrated the Streamys’ chosen medium. A particular highlight was the screen behind Shontelle’s performance that showed hundreds of YouTube clips, each one featuring a cover of her hit song “Impossible” and perfectly synced up to the singer-songwriters live performance of the song.

But Ice brought a particular energy, one that the other performers, for all of their musical talent, didn’t possess to the same degree. After all, it takes a certain something to get Toby Turner to make ridiculous faces in time with the music and to cause KassemG to sport a thankful pose at the end of the performance. It just so happens that certain something is a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles tattoo.

Ice’s full performance is available on the Streamys YouTube channel along with a full complement of clips from the show. The search is on to see which 90s rap sensation will bring the noise to the next Streamys. I’m lobbying hard for MC Hammer. After all, he’s performed with Internet sensations before, and I bet Tobuscus does a great hammer dance.
