The first batch of YouTube Original Channels contained six offerings in the “Beauty” category. Out of that number, only one–Michelle Phan’s Fawn–has gained six digit subscribers (and even they owe all of their fans to Phan and her 2.9 million followers). There is a clear opening for a premium YouTube fashion feed, and Look TV is hoping it can be the channel that breaks out. Look has launched four new series, each one centered around a different aspect of the New York fashion scene.
As a resident of the Big Apple, I appreciate the mildly territorial attitude behind Bedrocket’s fashion hub, but even non-New Yorkers can appreciate the highly crafted way in which the insular New York scene is presented to the whole world. This extrapolation of sorts is present in The L Train, a show that analyses hipster-tastic fashion trends in the heart of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Look’s New York focus gives it a uniqueness, but it’s still accessible for any fashion fan.
Along with The L Train, new shows include Look Weekly, a news program; Sexy, Not Sexy, which seeks to identify which sexy items women should most desire; and Sally’s Fashion Rant, where stylist Sally Lyndley dishes out her thoughts on a particular topic. All four shows are very centered around their hosts, and each show’s personality is as important as whatever topics the show discusses.
Look TV’s 86,000 subscribers put it at a similar popularity level as contemporaries u look haute and HelloStyle. With its new onslaught of programming, however, Look could quickly find itself become the most important YouTube channel for the New York fashion scene and beyond.
