Evil Empire Gets Some Image Management With ‘Death Star PR’

Shit Girls Say was able to turn a popular Twitter feed into a successful web series. Now, another well-liked account is looking to do the same. The team behind the Death Star PR feed have developed a six episode web series about the process of working public relations for the Star Wars Empire’s superweapon.

The creators of the web series, or at least its main actors, are quite British indeed, and the show’s humor is therefore very dry and occasionally quite subtle. The workplace is a very common setting for British comedy, and Death Star PR follows the lead of shows like The Office and The IT Crowd, albeit with an absurd sci-fi parody twist.

The Death Star PR YouTube channel has become a locus for trailers and clips related to the series. The popularity of the Twitter has driven a few thousand viewers to each clip, with over 3000 checking out the official trailer.

The whole series, however, is not available on the YouTube channel, as it is only available in a pay-to-view format on the Death Star PR

website. This seems like a strange choice to me, but maybe Star Wars fans are enough of a niche market to warrant such a model. A three dollar investment gets you all six episodes of the series, but each one is individually available for 99 cents a pop. Think of it as 3 dollars you would otherwise donate to a Death Star PR Kickstarter campaign.

The popular feed has over 232 thousand followers, so Death Star PR certainly has enough of a base to build a legitimate audience. I wouldn’t be surprised if the team behind the web series eventually abandons the pay-to-view model in favor of a conventional YouTube release, but if they have success, expect more Twitter feeds to make ‘the jump’. I’m looking at you, Weird Twitter.
