T-Series is staying strong at the head of the Global Top 50. During the third week of September, the Indian record showed why it is YouTube’s most-watched channel of all time. It picked up 985.1 million weekly views, and if it repeats that performance next week, it will likely complete a month-long run in the #1 position.

Beyond T-Series, the Global Top 50 is filled with its usual complement of children’s content. The next six spots in the ranking are all occupied by kid-friendly favorites, each of which collected at least 500 million weekly views. Changes are coming to YouTube’s family category — how will these channels adapt?
Can early childhood education channels deliver the health content YouTube wants?
For years, YouTube has been trying to improve the quality of the health and medical videos that appear on its platform. When done poorly, those videos can have negative mental health outcomes, especially among young viewers.
To turn things around, YouTube is investing in better-researched content in categories like medicine and parenting. It is also encouraging caregivers to try different strategies as they manage children’s mental health.
Independent creators have their own ideas. In this week’s Global Top 50, several channels are putting their own spins on kid-friendly lifestyle fare. Do those videos have a place in YouTube’s health content strategy?
First, let’s look at Doctora Sophia Español. Though its channel name alludes to a medical professional, it isn’t much different from a typical Top 50 entrant. Its short-form videos teach important lessons about sharing, obedience, and kindness, while incorporating popular topics like bright colors and superheroes.
So how did Doctora Sophia earn her PhD? Perhaps her health-conscious videos had something to do with it. YouTube’s health czars would probably like to see Doctora Sophia teaching kids how to take care of their teeth and maintain proper hygiene. They might not be so fond of another one of the channel’s top clips, which is all about the joy of (unhealthy) ice cream.
Doctora Sophia shows the pros and cons of independent YouTube content as it pertains to the platform’s health goals. These channels are imparting important life lessons to malleable young viewers, but they’re also playing fast and loose with the concept of education.
The positive health themes may put these indie channels in YouTube’s good graces, but the flashy colors and references to sweet treats are the qualities that haul in big view counts. Just look at NurSure. People aren’t gravitating to its videos just because they teach kids to fight germs. Instead, those viewers are drawn in by technicolor hairstyles and catchy ditties.
But that’s what works. NurSure is a relatively new channel, but it’s up to 24th place in the Global Top 50. Earlier this week, it achieved its best-ever single-day performance by collecting more than 80 million views over a 24-hour period.
As long as kid-friendly content remains the dominant category in the Global Top 50, there will be opportunities to work educational themes into trending videos. But if those ideas aren’t implemented in the right way, YouTube will continue to face scrutiny for its video library’s mental health effects.
Here’s one potential solution: Instead of teaching life lessons to kids, they should teach other creators how to make the best educational content. That way, they can focus on the “meat” of the videos without having to worry about all the bright colors and Spiderman references.
