A familiar face has returned to the #1 position in the Global Top 50. Anaya Kandhal, an Indian kidfluencer who is now five years old, led YouTube during the second full week of August, when she collected 937.2 million weekly views. That sum gave her a 100-million-view lead over the competition.

In general, India is dominating the Global Top 50. More than half of the entrants in this week’s chart — 26, to be precise — hail from the world’s most populous nation. Those creators are reaching global audiences by appealing to universal themes.
Short wife, meet short-form video
We’ve written at length about the popularity of kid-friendly content on YouTube Shorts. The success of this week’s #1 channel, Anaya Kandhal, shows that many of the viewers tuning into Shorts are likely watching on their parents’ accounts.
In the Global Top 50, India is the hotbed of high-ranking family channels, and many of the creators who run those channels first broke into the charts by appealing to domestic tastes. Last year, I discussed the recurring themes that show up across those channels. The memes driving these short-form superstars may not land outside of India, but within South Asia, they are golden.
A year later, some of those channels are switching up their approach. The Indian audience is massive, sure, but there’s a whole world of Shorts viewers out there, and they crave more universal content.
Tera Trigun, for example, was one of the creator I discussed when considering the appeal of Indian inside jokes. These days, the most-watched Shorts on Tera’s channel share a recurring theme. Tera has a short wife, and her petite stature has become the butt of many jokes. After all, you don’t need to speak Hindi to understand the humor of Tera’s wife driving around in a toy car.
For Tera Trigun, a broader form of comedy has opened up new doors. During the second week of August, he collected 419.4 million weekly views to move into 18th place in the Global Top 50. By the end of the summer, he will likely reach 20 billion lifetime views on his YouTube channel.
The humor of Tera Trigun’s short wife crosses cultural boundaries in numerous ways. It’s not just a simple joke; it’s an example of a this-or-that juxtaposition that plays well to the Shorts audience. Remember, there’s a lot of little kids running around here, so simple allusions to opposites — tall vs. short, big vs. small, happy vs. sad — tend to land well with the target audience.
That, I’d suppose, is how FatSongsong and ThinErmao were able to break into the Global Top 50. Chinese humor may be a tough sell for the international crowd, but the grokable humor of fat vs. thin can be easily translated. That idea has helped FatSongsong and ThinErmao in the past, and they just got their largest single-week view tally of the past six months.
Ultimately, regions like India, China, and Indonesia are still the hottest hotbeds of short-form family comedy. Adopting a more universal approach can help make the numbers go up, but even domestic favorites like Anaya Kandhal are still going strong.
Creators like Tera Trigun, however, are showing that short-form comedy can have an international appeal without sacrificing the aspects that appeal to compatriots. Tera’s focus on his wife appeals to the Indian audience’s love of family themes. His focus on her short stature, meanwhile, can connect with anyone who has a petite member of their family.
