Breaking down the billions of fans who took in the World Cup on YouTube and TikTok

Now that the 2026 FIFA World Cup has concluded, it’s time to take stock of the tournament’s winners and losers. It’s a joyous time for Spaniards, Cape Verdeans, and residents of the World Cup’s North American host countries, but the biggest winners might exist online.

For the first time, FIFA designated platforms like YouTube and TikTok as “preferred platforms.” That distinction gave creators increased access to the world’s largest soccer competition, and FIFA’s strategy paid off in a big way.

Let’s start our retrospective on YouTube, where soccer-loving influencers have been popping off for weeks on end. The most-discussed success story is that of CazéTV, the Brazilian creator who snagged the broadcast rights for the entire tournament. CazéTV’s streams proved to be so popular that the channel can now lay claim to all ten of the most-watched live streams in YouTube history.

For YouTube, however, World Cup wins were distributed far beyond a single Brazilian channel. In total

, a whopping 1.7 billion unique viewers watched World Cup content on YouTube during the tournament. 550 million of those viewers tuned in from their TV sets. World Cup content now has more than 200 billion lifetime views on YouTube.

Zooming in on creators, YouTube reported that its creator correspondents generated 2.5 billion views globally through their World Cup videos. Those creators reached more than 350 million subscribers in all.

As big as those numbers are, TikTok rivals them. According to a post published just before the July 19 final, TikTok’s official World Cup hub hauled in 24.1 billion views during the tournament. Nearly 20 million videos were counted across World Cup-related hashtags, and FIFA broadcaster live streams registered 465 million unique views.

“The FIFA World Cup 2026 has been the biggest content moment we’ve seen on TikTok, and it shows how fans experience global sporting events differently on our platform,” said TikTok Global Head of Sport Rollo Goldstaub in a statement. “People aren’t only watching highlights, they’re watching reactions, tactical breakdowns, behind-the-scenes access, and fan perspectives from around the world. Those different entry points make the sport more accessible, particularly for newer or more casual fans, and reflect the creativity and energy fans bring to TikTok every day.”

FIFA drew a lot of that attention on its own channels, but the success of the preferred platform strategy was arguably the World Cup organizer’s biggest win. By showing that social media discourse will dominate future editions of the Cup, FIFA set itself up for a massive expansion of its rights package in 2030 and beyond.

And then there’s Vozinha. The iconic goalkeeper from the Cabo Verde team only had about 50,000 Instagram followers before the 2026 World Cup began. Now, he has nearly 30 million — and that increase is the perfect representation of the digital glow-up experienced by World Cup players, fans, and organizers.
