On the Podcast: A24 goes Insta premium

FYI, Tubefilter has a podcast.

It’s hosted by our very own Joshua Cohen (that’s me) and Lauren Schnipper. Subscribe to Creator Upload on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen.

And we’re now also brought to you in part by link in bio service Bio Sites from Squarespace.

A24 has been doing cool stuff in Hollywood for almost a decade. It’s been responsible for distributing lots of offbeat (and hella good) projects across genres, from Everything Everywhere All at Once to Ex Machina to The VVitch, Hereditary, and Midsommar.

But in the last couple years, A24 has also been doing something else: getting more and more involved with the digital content space.

In 2020, it picked up Hazbin Hotel, the animated series created by YouTuber VivziePop and originally posted on her channel. Then, earlier this year, it signed on to distribute Talk to Me, the horror debut from Australian brothers Danny and Michael Philippou—aka longtime YouTube pranksters RackaRacka. Both Hazbin Hotel and Talk to Me are premium-quality projects from longtime digital creators.

Now A24 is venturing into premium content itself, with a pay-to-access Instagram account.

The account is part of its “AAA24

” subscription, what it calls an “all-access pass” to its quarterly zine, bonus content and free screening tickets, discounts in its merch shop, early access to drops, and exclusive members-only products, a membership pin, and more. The “and more” there is where the Instagram account—@a24closefriends—comes in. It’s the digital equivalent of a VIP lounge, and only AAA24 members get to follow.

Right now the account has 20,500 followers, meaning that at $5/month per person (give or take a few people for whatever funky reasons probably exist), the AAA24 membership is bringing in around $1.2 million a year for A24.

Pretty wild for a niche studio!

I get into all this and more with my co-host Lauren Schnipper in the latest installment of Creator Upload. Subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or whenever you listen. You’re gonna dig it.
