Rhett and Link’s $5 million creator fund backs The Sorry Girls with “biggest investment to date”

The Mythical Creator Accelerator has announced the third YouTube channel that will benefit from its investment dollars. The $5 million fund established by Rhett and Link‘s Mythical brand is backing The Sorry Girls, an enduring DIY hub founded by Kelsey MacDermaid and Becky Wright more than a decade ago.

In a press release, Mythical describes its creator support as a “multi-stage” investment that will help MacDermaid, Wright, and their colleagues establish new aspects of their shared business. The Creator Accelerator backs videomakers who have devoted followings, expanding operations, and “promise for thoughtful extensions into DTC real-world products,” per the release.

The Sorry Girls certainly fit that bill. MacDermaid and Wright’s main YouTube hub reaches more than two million YouTube subscribers and has amassed more than 350 million lifetime views since 2010. The DIY duo have built on their shared success by launching charitable initiatives

and expanding the size of their team. A recent collab with the American and Canadian First Ladies featured MacDermaid and Wright as well as Sorry Girls co-hosts Rochelle Gracey and Rachael Nyhuus.

In addition to The Sorry Girls, other recipients of Mythical’s Creator Accelerator capital have included comedian Jarvis Johnson and witty musician Daniel Thrasher. There are a few differences between those rounds an the Sorry Girls investment. This is the first time the Creator Accelerator has backed a group rather than an individual, and it’s the first time the fund has ventured outside of the United States. MacDermaid and Wright are “proud Canadians” whose channel name reflects one of the country’s most infamous pronunciations.

This is also the “biggest investment” the Creator Accelerator has made thus far, though the exact size of the deal has not been disclosed. In a joint statement, Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal described MacDermaid and Wright as “a talented and
ambitious creator duo” whose story mirrors that of the North Carolina-born best friends.

Wright described Rhett and Link as “a source of personal inspiration” for herself and her fellow DIY mavens. “We’re so proud of what we’ve built with The Sorry Girls over the last 13 years,” MacDermaid added. “We’ve developed a beautiful connection with our audience and seen consistent steady growth over the years but we have big goals, ideas, and aspirations we’ve been eager to accomplish.”

In addition to its support of specific creators, Mythical has also invested in tech products born out of the creator economy. Its portfolio in that area includes collaboration facilitator Pearpop and digital rights management firm SuperBam.
