When VidCon 2023 begins on June 21, the tech world will flock to Anaheim to share platform updates with online video professionals and community members. Meta may not be the title sponsor of the annual convention, but the company formerly known as Facebook is planning to court creators nevertheless. It has announced a slew of fresh updates, including “new ways to make money” from the vertical video format Reels.
The changes are cataloged in a blog post on the Facebook for Creators hub. The news is particularly relevant to accounts that upload Reels on either Facebook or Instagram, because Meta is attempting to weave those related formats together. A new Inspiration Hub on Facebook will invite users to discover the latest memes and viral sensations. Channels that buy into prevailing trends often rank highly in our Tubefilter charts, and Meta is inspiring its community to do exactly that.
Meta’s monetization suite is also forging more links between Facebook and Instagram. The tech giant is testing a feature that would allow users to cross-post branded Instagram Reels and Stories on Facebook.
Other monetization updates will bring more revenue opportunities to both of Meta’s top two platforms. The performance-based payout model Meta debuted earlier this year is now getting an expansion, and a “limited test” will “soon” allow some creators to monetize Reels that feature licensed music from the Facebook Audio Library. That effort will build on Meta’s previous attempts to give its users more opportunities with licensed music.
“The Performance bonus program, which rewards creators for garnering strong engagement on their posts, is expanding significantly, inviting more creators and introducing extra bonuses to help creators earn more,” reads the Facebook blog post. “Most successful creators in this program post regularly, typically every day, and many publish in lighter-touch formats such as photos and text posts.”
More information about Reels will be available for 2023 VidCon attendees. Last year, Meta activated at the annual event by putting a “Reels studio” inside the Anaheim Convention Center.
