Mayk.it, a social media and music startup founded by Cameo and Snap alums, has secured $4 million in seed funding.
The premise of the platform is to allow anyone to become a musician with simple creation tools — and an accompanying social network to distribute their work. The free app offers beginner-oriented voice filters, produced beats, lyrical and visual inspiration tools, and in-app distribution infrastructure. Music made on the platform is owned by creators.
Mayk.it was co-founded by former Cameo CMO Stefan Heinrich Henriquez (who serves as CEO, pictured above left) and former Snapchat engineer Akiva Bamberger (CTO, above right), who say they wanted to democratize and depressurize music creation in the same way that photo and video content flourishes on other platforms.
“Mayk.it is so close to my heart,” Heinrich Henriquez said in a statement. “Making songs is a great equalizer inaccessible to most. We all have a voice — and with access to free pro tools — anyone can experience music as a liberating creative outlet.”
The round featured participation from: Greycroft and Chicago Ventures (who were early backers of Cameo), as well as Slow Ventures, FirstMinute, Cameo co-founder and CEO Steven Galanis, Randi Zuckerberg, Mr Beast‘s talent management firm Night Media, former Spotify exec Sophia Bendz, angel investor Cyan Banister, T-Pain, and former BMG president Zach Katz.
Mayk.it is not widely available, but interested creators can join a waitlist by messaging Mayk.it on TikTok or Instagram.
