YouTube Will Permanently Shutter Standalone Gaming App On May 30

YouTube has confirmed that it will shutter the standalone YouTube Gaming app this Thursday, May 30.

YouTube first said that it was shuttering the app last September, whereupon it launched a new landing page on desktops at YouTube.com/Gaming. This hub brings together live streams and traditional video content from popular and up-and-coming gamers (which the platform will promote in a new ‘Gaming Creator On The Rise’ section), with a mix of both personalized recommendations and top content.

The Verge reports that YouTube has merged existing subscriptions for the flagship YouTube and YouTube Gaming apps, though users will lose the list of games they previously saved on YouTube Gaming.

“We want to continue to build a stronger home for the gaming community that thrives on YouTube, not just the YouTube Gaming app,” the company said in a Help page post. YouTube has previously said that 200 million people consume gaming content on the flagship YouTube app every month. “After May 2019, we’ll retire the YouTube Gaming app and focus our gaming efforts across YouTube.”
