YouTube Millionaires: Mother-And-Son Team ‘Rosa Y Jaime’ Make Their Content By Finding Creativity In Everyday Situations

Welcome to YouTube Millionaires, where we profile channels that have recently crossed the one million subscriber mark. There are channels crossing this threshold every week, and each has a story to tell about YouTube success. Read previous installments of YouTube Millionaires here.

This week’s YouTube Millionaires are a mother-son team, and that’s a first for us here at Tubefilter. We know there’s a saying about how going into business with family can be dicey, but turning YouTube into a family business has clearly worked out well for Rosa and Jaime Batres. The pair make content exclusively in Spanish (another first for our Millionaires column!), and in just three years on the platform, have gathered more than one million dedicated subscribers.

YouTube isn’t the only platform where Rosa — who’s from coastal state Sinaloa, Mexico — and Jaime have hit that golden one million. They actually got their start on Facebook, where they now have a whopping 6 million followers. And over on Instagram, they’ve collected more than 1.4 million. On all three platforms, Rosa and Jaime — who are both based in Los Angeles now — share comedic, prank-laden content that’s often filmed spontaneously.

If you’re not a Spanish speaker, the pair say not to worry — their antics cross language barriers.

To celebrate their million YouTube subscribers, Rosa and Jaime sat down with Tubefilter to chat about how they went from mother and son to dynamic creator duo, and how their in-the-moment approach to content has paid off as more and more fans flock to their videos.

Tubefilter: How does it feel to hit one million subscribers? What do you have to say to your fans?

Rosa y Jaime Batres: It feels great! Really, it’s an amazing feeling to yet again reach the one million threshold and this time on YouTube (we previously hit that mark on Instagram and Facebook)! We want to say to our fans that before and above anything… THANK YOU! We would not be where we are without the support from them!

Jaime: I also want to say to never give up on anything. Always strive for the best and don’t let anything interfere with your goals. See your mom as something more than just your mom…like a friend. Someone you can vibe with.

Tubefilter: You’re our first mother-and-son features for YouTube Millionaires! How did the two of you decide to start a YouTube channel together?

RYJB: We didn’t really “decide,” the vibe was already there. We realized we could entertain a whole different type of audience on YouTube, and we just went for it.

Tubefilter: What do you think makes your content stand out despite all the noise on YouTube?

RYJB: We think that most of our fans relate to everything we are doing. Even if it’s all in Spanish, the humor and entertainment is still there, and it is something that does not get lost in translation. We think our content specifically resonates with the Latino/Hispanic/Mexican-American community from having our moms hitting us with the chancla, to our parents getting upset at almost anything we do.

Tubefilter: When did you notice your channel really starting to pick up subscribers? Was there a specific video that went viral, or a type of video that seems to get more views than others?

Jaime: We noticed that our channel started picking up traction with one of our most viral videos, where I cut my mom’s cigarettes in an attempt to stop her from smoking. From there, we just started recording all our other pranks, and those are the videos that tend to do well.

Tubefilter: What’s your production process like? How often do you film, and how long does it take you to edit? Do you have a set upload schedule?

Jaime: We often post two to three times a week, and it’s usually in the spur of the moment. I always have my camera in hand and ready to record when something we think is funny happens. I do everything from appearing on camera, to editing and posting the videos. I recently started learning more about an editing software I like, and with practice I hope to get better at it soon. I am also working on setting an upload schedule, as we currently don’t have a specific schedule.

Tubefilter: There’s an old saying about not going into business with family, but obviously the two of you are an excellent team! Do you face any challenges working together on the channel?

Jaime: Yes, there’s a new challenge every time! Since my mother is older, I have to be mindful of her well-being. There are days that I have an excellent idea, but she is not in the mood to film it. I obviously don’t make her do anything she does not want to do, so I just roll with those punches — and, if we can, I reset the time to film it.

Tubefilter: How do you come up with ideas for videos?

Jaime: It sounds so cliché, but I honestly just find creativity in everyday situations. Sometimes it just comes out naturally…

Tubefilter: Do one or both of you consider YouTube your full-time job? What else do you get up to in your daily lives?

Jaime: Besides our channel, I have a business that I manage, ALV Entertainment. We currently have a couple musicians signed, and I hope that it will soon become much bigger than it is now.

Tubefilter: What’s your favorite part of making content specifically for YouTube?

Jaime: Vibing with my mom and really enjoying time with her. Doing things together and making other people laugh.

Tubefilter: What’s next for your channel? Any plans looking to the future?

RYJB: We wanted to make a movie, but unfortunately, we cannot fulfill the production costs at the moment. We are working on creating the official trailer first, and possibly releasing it on YouTube! Other than that, we’re going to continue riding this wave and get to that 10 million subscriber mark!!
