Snapchat Is Launching A Show Where Parents Look At Their Kids’ Dating App Profiles

An upcoming series that will be available through Snapchat‘s Discover section will give parents access to their children’s profiles on dating apps. It’s called Parental Guidance, and it comes from digital production company Vertical Networks.

The Hollywood Reporter, which first shared the news of Parental Guidance‘s pickup, likened the show to Parental Control, which aired on MTV in the mid-aughts. In both programs, a parent assesses a number of suitors before choosing one to set up on a date with his or her child. This time, that assessment will take place on dating apps, with parents sending messages to the would-be dates.

The most notable thing about Parental Guidance is its connection to Phone Swap, another dating show produced by Vertical Networks. That series, which gives two people access to each other’s phones before setting them up on a date, reached a peak audience of 14 million viewers

during its first season, making it one of Snapchat’s most popular originals.

Parental Guidance is about exploring the gap between who we really are and how we choose to present ourselves to the world,” said Vertical Networks CEO Tom Wright. In introducing parents and letting them see how their children have been dating, we add another layer of awkwardness.”

Parental Guidance will premiere on July 24 on Snapchat Discover.
