Anne Rice’s ‘The Vampire Chronicles’ Stakes A Spot At Hulu

Hulu has officially snagged The Vampire Chronicles. Author Anne Rice obtained theatrical rights to her 11-book series of the same name back in 2016, then optioned the series out to Paramount Television and Anonymous Content in 2017. Now, Lestat and Co. are at last on their way to a TV series produced by streaming service Hulu, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Reporter called the series’ signing a “competitive situation,” with interest from multiple parties — not surprising since the first screen adaptation of the series, the 1994 Brad Pitt/Tom Cruise film Interview With The Vampire, more than earned out its $60 million budget and was nominated for two Oscars.

But Rice maintains it’s “abundantly clear that television is where the vampires belong” — making a streaming service like Hulu, which recently ordered a third season of its hit

The Handmaid’s Tale, an ideal home. IMDb information for Hulu’s series says it will be based on the first two Vampire Chronicles books: Interview with the Vampire and The Vampire Lestat.

Rice’s son and fellow author Christopher Rice has written the script that Hulu will produce, but the series is currently without a helm, as Hannibal director Bryan Fuller left the project six months ago “rather than step on the toes of longtime friends Anne Rice and her son,” per the Reporter.

No details are yet available about a potential release date, but news that the series is formally in development will likely be exciting for fans of the supernatural franchise, who haven’t seen a large- or small-screen adaptation of The Vampire Chronicles since Queen Of The Damned in 2002.
