Hulu Hit ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Bafflingly Launches Wine Line

As far as unlikely product spinoffs go, Hulu’s new line of Handmaid’s Tale-inspired wines may take the cake — and such an offer even feels oddly tone deaf given the show’s exploration of decidedly serious and prescient themes, including fundamentalism and female subjugation.

Nevertheless, The Handmaid’s Tale unveiled three varietals today in collaboration with Lot 18 — an online wineseller that also creates custom wines for other media properties, People

reports, including Portlandia and The Bachelor. Each of the varietals was inspired by one of the breakout series’ characters, including: protagonist Offred (portrayed by Elisabeth Moss), fellow handmaid Offglen (Alexis Bledel), and antagonist Serena Joy (Yvonne Strahovski).

Moss and Bledel’s characters both inspired reds, given that their characters are subjugated women in a future dystopia who are perpetually bedecked in long, crimson robes. Offred’s Pinot Noir is described by Lot 18 as a wine that “will stay with you long after you’ve finished your glass,” while Ofglen’s Cabernet Sauvignon marks “a daring testament to the heights that Oregon Cabs can reach.” Strahovski’s blend, on the other hand, is a white wine — a Bordeaux Blanc. Her character is part of the subjugating system — though “a few sips reveal it to be hiding layers of approachable white grapefruit and lemongrass,” according to the label.

The three varietals are limited edition, and are sold in sets of two bottles, priced at $40 — or $60 for all three. “These are the three wines to enjoy while you watch these women’s stories unfold on screen, or while you contemplate their impossible situations afterwards,” writes Lot 18.

The season two finale of The Handmaid’s Tale airs tomorrow on Hulu.
