Instagram Finally Rolls Out ‘Mute’ Button, 3 Years After Twitter Unveiled Feature

Instagram has finally taken the lid off a long-clamored-for feature, and will enable users to ‘mute’ other users’ posts from appearing in their feeds.

Twitter launched the mute button all the way back in 2014 — though the feature has risen to popularity on that platform mostly as a means of disappearing trolls without alerting them that you have done so. Instagram explained that it integrated ‘mute’ to make feeds more personalized and to “manage complex social dynamics” — noting that it will roll out to all users in coming weeks.

While it was previously possible to mute someone’s Instagram Stories by tapping and holding their profile icon, per BuzzFeed, now users can mute photo and video posts in the main feed as well. The feature can be accessed by tapping the three dots on the upper right hand corner of any user’s post, which will offer options to mute posts, Stories, or both. Users will still be able to receive DMs and notifications from muted friends when tagged in their photos or comments.
