Vice‘s 2018 NewFronts presentation, sans company co-founder Shane Smith, may have been slightly less wild than in previous years, but the media brand’s content remains as bold and edgy as ever. Its slate of upcoming shows includes Humans of the Year, an awards show that will celebrate “people changing the world,” as well as She’s Running, which will spotlight female candidates who are seeking political office during the 2018 election season.
Smith had appeared at several of Vice’s previous NewFronts pitches, which featured party-like atmospheres. In March, however, he announced he would cede his CEO position to former A&E exec Nancy Dubuc, months after a scathing New York Times report shed light on a culture of sexual misconduct at the media company. Dubuc (pictured above) led off Vice’s latest NewFronts spiel, even though she won’t officially take over as CEO until the end of the month.
Another new hire is SVP of Content Strategy and Community Marsha Cooke, who led a conversation on the NewFronts stage about Vice’s upcoming content initiatives. Humans of the Year, as a sizzle reel showed, will eschew the typical glitz and glamour of awards shows in favor of a month-long exploration of those who are “changing the world through innovation.” Meanwhile, on the Garage channel (which Vice launched in 2016), viewers can look forward to Disorient Express, an “unscripted short film” that will take place on a train en route to the 2019 Venice Biennale festival. Finally, on Vice’s TV hub Viceland, comedian Tom Arnold will lead The Hunt For The Trump Tapes.
In total, Vice said that its existing library of content now generates 176 million monthly impressions across all platforms.
