Hulu Celebrates 17 Million Subscribers With Renewals, New Show From ‘Get Out’ Studio

Hulu had a strong 2017, and the SVOD platform it looking to continue its success into the new year. On the same day it reached 17 million subscribers, it scooped up a new horror anthology series that will be produced by Blumhouse Television.

The anthology’s 12 episodes will be spread out over a full year, with a new installment arriving each month. Variety, which first reported on the show, said there will be a central narrative device that will connect all the stories.

Blumhouse Television is a division of Blumhouse, founded by Jason Blum (pictured above). The studio is known for churning out low-budget horror movies, some of which have gone on to achieve phenomenal success. Blumhouse’s biggest hit to date has been Get Out, the savvy thriller that earned two Golden Globe nominations.

“We think this is an innovation,” Blumhouse Television co-president Marci Wiseman told Variety. “We haven’t split the atom. But Hulu’s commitment to create episodic installments of an anthology series and to event-ize each of them — you don’t get that kind of commitment from partners very often, and we’re really excited and enthused.”

As Hulu continues to add new projects to its original content library, it is emboldened by the returns it has received from previous pickups. The Handmaid’s Tale has brought Hulu critical, commercial, and award season attention. In order to prove it is more than a one-hit wonder, Hulu has also picked up second seasons of two shows that premiered in 2017. Both Future Man and Runaways have received fresh episode orders, Hulu announced on January 8.
