‘Despacito’ Rapidly On Track To Surpass ‘See You Again’ As Most-Viewed YouTube Video Ever

A little more than a week after the Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth anthem See You Again supplanted K-Pop star Psy’s five-year record for the most-viewed YouTube video of all time, it looks like a new contender is poised to assume the throne. Despacito, the megahit Spanish song by Luis Fonsi featuring Daddy Yankee (Despacito means slowly in English), has already become the most-streamed song ever across all digital platforms in just six month — with 4.6 billion total plays.

And soon, Despacito (below) is set to overtake both See You Again and Gangnam Style on YouTube, reports Digital Music News. While two-year-old See You Again, a tribute to the late actor Paul Walker, counts 2.93 billion views, five-year-old Gangnam Style counts 2.91 billion views. Despacito, at just six months old, has already clocked 2.67 billion views and counting. No YouTube video has hit 3 billion views as of yet, though Despacito

is the fastest to have surpassed 2 billion views — in just 154 days.

The figures illuminate the massive popularity of Latin music, per Digital Music News, as well as the irrefutable influence of Justin Bieber, who released a remix of Despacito that has amassed hundreds of millions of views in its own right.

Despacito was also the Spanish-language music video on Vevo with the most views in 24 hours (5.4 million), according to Billboard, and the fastest Spanish language Vevo video to hit 200 million views — a feat it accomplished in just 22 days.
