A YouTube Campaign Looks To Smash Stereotypes By Celebrating #BlackFathersDay

With Father’s Day around the corner, a group of YouTubers are rejecting negative stereotypes surrounding black dads. Divergent Media is behind the #BlackFathersDay, which is hoping to share positive stories of creators and their children.

To launch the #BlackFathersDay campaign, Divergent Media founder Austin Null (who is a successful YouTuber in his own right) solicited videos from a pair of family vloggers: Beleaf and LaGuardia Cross. In their contributions to the campaign, those two men talked about what fatherhood means to them.

As Null told Tubefilter, the goal of #BlackFathersDay is to get the campaign’s titular hashtag trending on social media once Father’s Day rolls around. “On a

big picture level, we’re just hoping to communicate the message that black fathers exist and they are killing it at being fathers,” he said. “The black experience isn’t monolithic and that’s especially true for black fathers so the more unique and positive stories that are out there in the media the better.”

#BlackFathersDay fits in with the overall message of Divergent Media. The agency, launched last year by Null, works exclusively with creators of color on influencer marketing projects.

Ahead of the holiday in its name, #BlackFathersDay has started to gain some traction. Here, from author, singer, and blogger Ramel Werner, is an additional contribution to the campaign.
