YouTube Kids Could Let Parents Police Settings Remotely, May Add Gaming Page

Google may be developing an app that will enable parents to manage settings on their children’s YouTube Kids accounts remotely.

The app, reportedly called Family Link, was uncovered in an Android Police teardown of YouTube Kids. With Family Link, parents would no longer have to wrestle a device from their children’s hands in order to police content. New code strings suggest parents would be able to manage search and content settings, as well as block specific videos and channels.

It is unclear whether Family Link might be used solely in conjunction with YouTube Kids, or if it could serve as a de facto platform for all Google parental controls, Android Police reports.

In addition to Family Link, the teardown reveals that a gaming section could be coming soon to YouTube Kids. An animation for a new video game controller was spotted at the top of the app’s navigation bar, Android Police reports. In the past, YouTube Kids has experimented with other new content categories, including for Halloween-themed and party-centric videos.

Last month, YouTube Kids announced that it had amassed more than 8 million weekly active users and 30 billion in-app views. The app also announced its first slate of four original YouTube Red series — from girl group L2M, Minecraft creator DanTDM, and more — specifically targeting younger viewers.
