Netflix, Amazon Nabbed 2 Awards Apiece At Last Night’s Golden Globes

Netflix and Amazon, two of the web’s most critically renowned streaming platforms, picked up two awards each at last night’s Golden Globes — where Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos even got a shoutout onstage from host Jimmy Fallon in his opening monologue. “He actually arrived yesterday, but there was no one around to sign for him,” Fallon joked.

Both of Netflix’s awards were for The Crown, the platform’s most expensive original series to date about the life and times of Queen Elizabeth II, which nabbed the award for Best Actress In a Television Series (Claire Foy), as well as Best Television Series — Drama. Amazon, for its part, received the award for Best Actor In A Television Series — Drama, which Billy Bob Thornton took home for legal series Goliath. Amazon also won the award for Best Actor In A Motion Picture — Drama, which Casey Affleck

received for Manchester By The Sea.

While Amazon did not produce Manchester By The Sea, it is responsible for the distribution of the film, and it marks the first time that Amazon Studios has ever won a major film category award, Engadget reports.

Despite these successes, digital platforms took a step backwards this year in terms of overall Globes nominations following two years of steady growth. Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu received 13 nominations last year, for instance, but only nine this year — with Hulu being shut out of the 2017 Golden Globes entirely.
