Instagram just reported some rather stunning growth stats. The Facebook-owned photo and video sharing platform says it now counts 600 million monthly active users. What makes that figure all the more impressive is that Instagram says 100 million of those new users have joined the service within the past six months.
“A lot has changed this year,” Instagram wrote in a blog post, likely referring to an onslaught of new features that it has unveiled in recent months, “but the Instagram community and the diversity of expression it provides has remained consistent.”
On Tuesday, Instagram launched its live video capabilities, which are located within its Stories section — another new feature that the company launched back in August
in order to incorporate a functionality that had become explosively popular on Snapchat. Stories users can now go live with a single swipe on Instagram, and broadcasts are deleted upon their conclusion. Last month, Instagram also pilfered another popular Snapchat feature when it gave users the ability to direct message one another disappearing photos and videos.Instagram also attributes its growth to new safety tools. In August, for instance, the platform rolled out new features that let users moderate their own comments sections.
