YouTube Millionaires: On Her Channel, Chloe Lukasiak Calls The Shots

Welcome to YouTube Millionaires, where we profile channels that have recently crossed the one million subscriber mark. There are channels crossing this threshold every week, and each has a story to tell about YouTube success. Read previous installments of YouTube Millionaires here.

After rising to prominence thanks to her role on the first four seasons of the Lifetime series Dance Moms, Chloe Lukasiak has furthered her career with some help from the Internet. Lukasiak, a 15-year-old dancer from Pennsylvania, began posting videos on her YouTube channel in 2010. Since then, she has amassed a loyal base of more than one million subscribers, not just through dance videos, but also through vlogs in which she shares her fashion sense, makeup tips, and other aspects of her life with fans. Here are her thoughts on her digital presence as it has unfolded thus far.

Chloe Lukasiak: I’m humbled and flattered! I can’t believe that many people are interested to see what I have to say! I couldn’t do anything without the love and support from all of the fans.

TF: What is the most significant way in which your life has changed since your first TV appearance?

CL: I think just all of the incredible opportunities that I am given. Sometimes, I still look around and think “how did I get here?”

TF: What made you decide to launch a YouTube channel, and who are your biggest influences in that area?

CL: When I left Dance Moms, I wanted a way to stay in touch with everyone, and I thought it would be awesome if I had control for a change. There are so many people I love to watch on YouTube, but I don’t know if they “influence” me. I try to stay true to who I am.

TF: What do you think are the biggest advantages social media has over TV in terms of its potential as a creative platform?

CL: There is no one calling the shots but you! After so many years of being told what to do, I can do what I want!

TF: On the other hand, do you think there are parts of your personality that shine through on TV better than on YouTube?

CL: It is very hard to find the right people who know dance well enough to shoot a great dance video for YouTube, so I would say I miss the dance aspect of being on TV.

TF: How do you decide what parts of your life to share with your fans?

CL: I try to just be open and honest about myself. There are a few things I like to keep for myself, but I’m pretty open.

TF: What do you think are the elements of a compelling dance routine?

CL: Beautiful lighting, shooting the right angles, and, most importantly, telling a story with movement.

TF: What’s one area where you think you can improve your YouTube videos?

CL: I always want to try everything! I think if I had one area that I focused on, maybe? But my interested change all the time and I think my channel reflects that.

TF: What’s next for your channel? Any fun plans?

CL: I have something super fun planned for the holidays! I CANT WAIT!!
