The ‘Pokemon Generations’ Web Series Is A Nostalgia Trip For Nintendo Fans

The hype surrounding Pokemon Go has subsided a bit, but Nintendo’s monster-battling franchise is still as relevant as it’s been in 20 years, and a new web series is looking to stir up even more nostalgic feelings among Pokemon devotees. The show is called Pokemon Generations, and it animates thrilling adventures that draw from two decades of Pokemon games.

In case it wasn’t clear from its name alone who Pokemon Generations is targeting, the first episode begins with an 8-bit battle scene from Pokemon Red, instantly bringing millennials on a nostalgia trip back to the late 90s. What follows is a bright, crisply animated adventure that follows Pikachu as he moves through classic levels from multiple Pokemon games. Even if you’ve never owned a Nintendo console, there’s still plenty of fast-paced, anime-style action to enjoy here.

The second episode of Generations, released on the same day as the first, shows that the web series won’t only appeal to old-school Nintendo fans. Its main character was introduced in Pokemon X and Y, which came out 17 years after Red.

Will Generations generate the same sort of impact we saw when Pokemon Go arrived earlier this summer? No, of course not, don’t be silly. Even so, it’s a well-made web series that hits the right notes, and it deserves any praise that comes its way. According to Polygon, new episodes will arrive each week through December 23rd.
