‘Honest Trailers’ Lampoons Its Fellow Emmy Nominees

In case you haven’t heard, Honest Trailers managed to snag itself an Emmy nomination in one of the award show’s new short-form categories. Don’t think for a second, though, that the recognition earned by the Defy Media-produced web series will go to its head. Instead of offering congratulatory pats on the back to its fellow nominees, Honest Trailers has chosen to lampoon 15 of them in a single episode.

The Emmy edition of Honest Trailers pokes fun at all seven nominated shows in both the Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Comedy Series categories, as well as the limited series nominee The People v. O.J. Simpson, because, as Honest Trailers narrator Jon Bailey remarks, “it was awesome.” The FX drama, however, is not the only show to receive uncharacteristic praise from the Honest Trailers gang. Instead of broadly mocking the Emmy nominees, the web series’ writers choose to poke fun wherever possible. They rib Game of Thrones

, for example, for depicting a heroic winning streak its next season surely will erase, while political programs like House of Cards and Veep are mocked for failing to live up to the over-the-top insanity of our real-life political process.

In the end, the video turns out to be an appeal to the Television Academy in the only way Honest Trailers knows. It’s as if Defy Media is negging the Emmy voters, so to speak. We’ll learn on September 18th whether that strategy works out; fellow nominee Epic Rap Battles of History should release an Emmy diss verse, just to be safe.
