In 2014, Cartoon Network released a mobile app called Adventure Time Card Wars. Card Wars, a collective card game akin to Magic: The Gathering, was based off a 2012 episode of the Cartoon Network series Adventure Time, in which the show’s protagonists, Finn and Jake, play a version of the game themselves.
Card Wars, which has been downloaded more than six million times, has proved to be such a big hit that Cartoon Network is rolling out a sequel to it. In order to promote that new release, it has turned to the world of online gamers. Cartoon Network’s parent company Turner and digital network Machinima have announced a partnership that will beget a Card Wars tournament among top YouTube gaming stars.
The upcoming sequel to Card Wars is called Card Wars Kingdom, and the most significant feature it adds to the franchise is a player-vs-player mode. In order to show off the new game’s interpersonal combat, Machinima partners ChimneySwift11, JeromeASF, CavemanFilms, and TJ Smith Gaming will compete in a four-person tournament that will be streamed live on Machinima’s Twitch channel beginning at 3 PM EST on July 15th. The tournament, titled Let’s Play Flooping Card Wars, is timed to coincide with the launch of Card Wars Kingdom, which will hit the App Store, Google Play, and the Amazon Store on July 14th.
“Adventure Time is one of the most unique and beloved shows on television, which has developed a fanbase of kids and adults that is second-to-none,” said Don Reilley, Machinima’s Head of Brand Partnerships, in a press release. “So we expect that all fans of the program will want to tune in for this one-of-a-kind, epic livestream event.”
Fans who miss the live stream will be able to catch on-demand videos related to the event on the respective channels of the participating creators. Those VODs will be available until July 25th.
