Another one of the six channels Vice plans to launch in the coming year is taking shape. The Brooklyn-based media company has acquired Garage Magazine, which will form the basis of a new art, fashion, architecture, and design channel expected to launch in the coming months.
Garage, which launched in 2011 in the UK, offers up a biannual print publication to its subscribers. “[Founder Dasha Zhukova] and the Garage team have created an amazing product that melds the worlds of publishing and technology with art, design and fashion to create something totally unique,” said Vice Media global executive creative director Tom Punch. “Garage will bring an arsenal of creative ideas and people to Vice so we are thrilled to help Dasha grow Garage’s digital presence and bring their ideas and collaborations to new audiences around the globe.”
Garage already posts occasional videos on a self-branded YouTube channel. It’s unclear if the new art destination will be built there, but Vice has done something like that in the past. In 2014, it launched its Vice Sports vertical on the same channel that once housed YouTube-backed sports channel The NOC.
Vice founder Shane Smith announced his company’s plan to launch seven new verticals during a Newfronts presentation, though the official count was later amended to six. Other upcoming channels to be launched under the Vice brand include a health destination led by a former Prevention Magazine exec and a gaming hub helmed by a former Giant Bomb employee. Financial terms of Vice’s Garage Magazine acquisition were not revealed.
