GE, Bill Nye Discuss The Science Of ‘Star Wars’ Holograms

May 4th is celebrated around the world as Star Wars Day, and this year, one of the most creative takes on the galaxy far, far away comes from General Electric and Bill Nye. In the latest episode of the conglomerate’s Emoji Science web series, Nye uses the titular icons to explain the real-life science behind holograms.

The video explains how intersecting beams of light allow engineers to create objects that appear three-dimensional to the observer. As Nye explains, real-life technology doesn’t yet allow us to recreate Star Wars‘ holograms, but as he says, “who knows what’s coming.”

Nye’s emoji-fueled explanation of holograms is the latest installment of Emoji Science, which was born in 2014 out of a pop-up lab GE created in New York City. The corporation created a “Periodic Table of Emojis

” and asked Snapchat users to send in their favorite icons. It then responded to those users with videos that show off experienced inspired by each emoji. Nye, who used a flashy, whimsical presentation style on his TV series Bill Nye the Science Guy, has hosted several Emoji Science videos, which can be found on The Watercooler, a channel run by Mashable. Previously, he used emoji to explain the topic of evolution.

According to Co.Create, more Emoji Science episodes are on the way. “The new five-part series #EmojiScience will air on the EmojiScience site throughout the year,” reads a recent article, “and hit on topics like energy efficiency, mapping the mind, and materials science, in which recent discoveries show serious potential to impact the world.”
