Tonight’s Division I college basketball championship between Duke and Wisconsin will provide the finale to an entertaining season, and as they have all month long, fans will go to YouTube after the game to check out the highlights. According to info from Pixability, March Madness content has generated more than 22 million views since the start of the annual tournament.
Shortly before the beginning of the tournament, the NCAA and Turner Sports teamed up to launch an official YouTube channel that offers previews, highlights, and analysis of March Madness games. However, as with many other trends on YouTube, fans have flocked to user-generated videos much more than official content. Of the 22 million views Pixability reports, only 4.4 million have come from the NCAA’s new channel. The rest have come from nearly 1,000 other videos uploaded across YouTube during the tournament.
By comparison, the NFL’s official YouTube channel, which launched shortly before the Super Bowl, generated more than 18 million views across the same time period after its launch. Pixability notes how these official channels often experience slow starts.
It is March Madness sponsors who have benefited most clearly from the event’s YouTube content. CapitalOne and Buffalo Wild Wings have both seen their views jump by more than 20% between February and March.
