Crackle Postpones ‘The Throwaways’ Release Due To Sony Hack

Sony-owned Crackle won’t be releasing its now-ironically-themed feature film The Throwaways as planned. The cyber thriller’s premiere has been postponed to sometime in January 2015.

The Throwaways was originally set for release on December 19, 2014, but the recent hacks of Crackle’s parent company’s internal files have caused Sony to pause that plan. An insider with knowledge on the matter told The Wrap about the postponement, clarifying Sony didn’t consider the film “appropriate” due to the company’s own cyber issues.

The Throwaways stars Sam Huntington (of Superman Returns and Being Human fame) as Drew Reynolds, a hacker tracked down by the CIA and forced to choose between life in prison or working to take down a cyber-terrorist for the organization. Reynolds opts for the latter, with the condition that he can pick his own team. He selects a group of “throwaways” deemed unfit for regular duty in the CIA, including Colonel Christopher Holden

(James Caan from The Godfather) and combat specialist Dan Fisher (Kevin Dillon of Platoon).

The cyber-thriller is one of a few direct-to-digital films in Sony’s library (Crackle also plans to bring the Joe Dirt sequel to digital). Other Sony films like Annie and Fury were also affected by the hacks due to being leaked online before their planned theatrical releases. And recently, more stolen information revealed how Sony was considering selling a majority stake in Crackle to help “save the year” financially.

No new release date has been set for The Throwaways as of yet. We’ll likely hear more as soon as Sony gets its rather embarrassing hacking problem sorted out.
