Indiegogo Lets Some Films Raise More Money With “Forever Funding”

Indiegogo‘s flexible crowdfunding platform has allowed innovators to raise millions from among more than 15 million users, and a recent development has particular filmmakers seeing even larger dollar signs. Indiegogo has extended its “Forever Funding” feature to several high-profile film projects on the site, thus allowing them to continue raising money even though their goals have already been met.

Indiegogo first announced Forever Funding in September, though as The Hollywood Reporter explains, the feature did not apply to films until recently. When THR reached out to Indiegogo for comment, the crowdfunding company referred to the project’s introductory blog post. “By allowing campaigns to continue after they reach their goals,” reads the post, “this turnkey pilot project reflects the increased use of Indiegogo by businesses, artists and activists who seek to attract and develop new audiences.”

In total, Indiegogo selected 15 films to participate. One of those films, Gosnell, is the second most-funded film project on the site, having raised more than $2.2 million during its initial campaign. Another selected film, Pure Pwnage: Teh Movie

, is based off a web series of the same name. Visitors who venture over to the Indiegogo pages for these projects will find a few perks available. Backers who “Act Now!” can add to each film’s total, even though the initial funding goals have already been met.

The uses for this bonus funding varies by project. The Gosnell filmmakers told THR they plan to use any addition funds to optimize their cast, shooting schedule, and distribution.

Forever Funding is still in its infancy, but it could emerge as a viable way for crowdfunders to connect with potential backers who may have missed the boat the first time around. We’ll keep an eye out to see how much extra dough the selected films can pull in after the fact.
