YouTube’s biggest multi-channel network dedicated to sports content just scored a big boost. Whistle Sports, whose partners have a collective 8.3+ million subscribers across 192 channels, has closed a $7 million investment from European broadcaster Sky Sports.
Sky Sports – a group of sports TV channels aggregated under and operated by British Sky Broadcasting that televisies matches from the biggest leagues (e.g. English Premier League Football, Super League Rugby) across Europe – will use its “content and relationships with major sports bodies and brands to work alongside Whistle Sports’ talent network,” according to the company’s Managing Director Barney Francis. The talent network Francis speaks of includes top YouTube sports-oriented channels stateside, like Dude Perfect and Brodie Smith.
This is the second investment round this year for Whistle Sports. In May, just five months after the network’s launch, it announced $10 million in funding.
“This partnership is a tremendous fit for us, given our focus on international expansion,” said Whistle Sports Founder and CEO John West in a release. “Sky is a recognized leader in sports entertainment and delivery and brings to the partnership some of the highest quality creative and production teams in sports. We look forward to connecting them with our rapidly growing audience and community of creators.”
