Gillian Jacobs, Paul Rust To Star In Judd Apatow’s ‘Love’ On Netflix

For the first time in more than a decade, Judd Apatow will serve as the creator of a TV series, and this time, he’s bringing his work to Netflix. The man known for his successful string of comedy films is one of three creative talents behind Love, an upcoming comedy series that will start Community star Gillian Jacobs and Paul Rust.

Love is co-created by Apatow, Rust, and Lesley Arfin, and it will follow its two protagonists as they sort through the ups and downs of their romantic relationship. The series was initially rumored for a potential release through Hulu, but the production team of Legendary Television and Apatow Productions ultimately opted for Netflix. “I am so excited to get to work with Paul and Lesley on this project,” said Apatow in a release. “Netflix has been supportive in ways I couldn’t create in my wildest fever dreams.”

As we’ve previously noted, Netflix seems hungry for quality sitcoms, especially since Amazon has made a particularly big investment in that genre. The only live-action sitcom Netflix has distributed is the fourth season of Arrested Development (which Rust worked on as a story editor).For Love, Netflix has already committed to two seasons, with ten episodes in 2016 and twelve more in 2017. “Judd Apatow has a unique comedic voice that manages to be delightful, insightful, and shockingly frank — often at the same time,” said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos

in a release. “Together with Paul and Lesley, he’s bringing a whole new level of agony and ecstasy to this modern day comedy of manners.”

While he is now best known for comedy films like The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, and Funny People, Apatow scored his first major hits on TV, including the cult-classic high school sitcom Freaks and Geeks. The creator of that show, Paul Feig, is also coming to the web through a show on Yahoo Screen. Arfin was once linked to a Yahoo series of her own, though there have been no updates about the status of that project.

With hits like Orange is the New Black and House of Cards in its library, Netflix is already the most prominent online distributor of TV-length programming. When Love arrives in 2016, the rich will only get richer.
