Netflix Doubles Emmys Presence (And Then Some) With 31 Nominations

Last year, Netflix made a big splash at the Primetime Emmys. Led by breakout hit House of Cards, the digital video platform scored 14 nominations and earned its first win when David Fincher took home a gold statuette for his directorial work on House of Cards‘ debut episode. This year, Netflix’s Emmys presence has soared even higher. With Orange Is The New Black joining House of Cards in the spotlight, Netflix has earned 31 Emmy nominations, more than double last year’s total.

Orange Is The New Black debuted too late to earn any Emmy consideration in 2013, but it was a given that Jenji Kohan’s excellent prison dramedy would receive plenty of love from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Sure enough, Orange Is The New Black fared well; its 12 nominations are one fewer than the 13 given to House of Cards. Together, Netflix’s two biggest hits combine for most of the site’s nominations and give Netflix a spot in most of the major writing, acting, and directing categories.

The most prominent documentary to be distributed by Netflix also scored some Emmy noms. The Square, which was previously nominated for an Academy Award,  is up for four Emmys. Some may wonder why Netflix is allowed to submit The Square

as both a film and a TV show, but this at least provides one reason why the platform is so interested in distributing documentaries. Given its unique format, it can “double dip” in the two most important awards ceremonies of the year.

Several other online video platforms scored token nominations. Crackle‘s Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee is nominated for Outstanding Short-Form Nonfiction Program, where it is up against Steve Buscemi‘s Park Bench and Jay Leno’s Garage, among others. In the corresponding fiction category, Between Two Ferns has a chance to earn Funny Or Die an Emmy win. The comedy studio can also pick up a win in Best Interactive Program, where the Chris Hardwick-hosted @midnight is in contention.

Netflix’s 31 nominations are an amazing total, but we knew the burgeoning platform would get a lot of nods. It will be more interesting to see if it can top its single win from 2013; we expect it will, but we’ll know for sure on August 25th.

A full list of nominees is available via Deadline.
