In order to promote the Tuesday, July 9 television premiere of Drunk History, Comedy Central is filling its Facebook page with a heavy serving of revisionist history spiked with humor. Texts between America’s Founding Fathers reveal Thomas Jefferson may or may not have written the Declaration of Independence under the influence, newfound maps tell a story that William H. Seward may or may not have made the Alaska Purchase after falling in like with the North Pacific land’s alcohol establishments, and photos show the crack in the Liberty Bell may or may not have been caused by a couple of inebriated revolutionaries.
If the Adam McKay, Will Ferrell, and Gary Sanchez Productions produced program is as funny as it’s social media marketing campaign, the show won’t stumble in it’s transition from the web to TV.
The first installment of Drunk History aired online on Funny or Die way back in August 2007. Since then, sporadic episodes have made their way to the web, all featuring famous Hollywood stars in period costumes acting out the drunken slurs of amateur historians. In January 2013, roughly five-and-a-half-years after its internet debut, Comedy Central greenlit the order for eight-half hour episodes
to air in the Summer of 2013.It’s been a long time coming, but today at 10/9 Central the series originally conceived of by comedian Derek Waters makes it’s television debut. Here’s a sneak peek of the premiere and an interesting interpretation with Jack Black and Bob Odenkirk of that one time Elvis showed up at the White House, got a meeting with President Nixon, and became a Federal Agent-At-Large in the Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs.
Drunk History is the latest in a handful of web-to-TV transition stories and the the third such story involving a Funny or Die production. The variety program Funny or Die Presents debuted on HBO in February 2010 and a one-hour special of Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis aired on Sunday, May 6, 2012 as a lead-in to the Second Annual Comedy Awards on Comedy Central.
