David Cross’ FKR.TV Channel Mixing Quiet Humor And Music

Comedian David Cross pops up every once in a while on the Internet, whether it be on Super Deluxe or Bonnaroo365, but the well-traveled comedian now has a permanent online video home. Before you enjoy Cross in the upcoming Netflix season of Arrested Development (just three weeks away!), it’s worth examining FKR.TV, a hybrid music/comedy channel founded by Cross and Frenchkiss Records founder Syd Butler.

Though it is not affiliated with YouTube’s Original Channels, FKR.TV uses a similar format. It features an established name in the role of executive producer, provides a regular stream of original content, and, as evidenced by the channel trailer, hits on subjects (such as music, kids, and cats) that make the Internet go round.

The music comes from Frenchkiss, a New York-based label that helped discover celebrated indie bands such as Passion Pit, Bloc Party, and The Hold Steady. FKR.TV hosts music videos from the label’s bands, several of which have brought in millions of viewers

It seems a couple of those viewers click around to discover the channel’s heart and soul: its original series. Thus far, FKR.TV is home to three narrative programs: One, Blowing Up With Nadia, features goofy vignettes with semi-famous people like pitcher John Axford. The second, Hundredaires, follows two hipsters as they mourn the loss of their suddenly famous third roommate. Finally, there is Song of the Wild, a dryly funny faux-reality show with dashes of Burning Love and MyMusic. Check out the first episode, which features Cross:

I normally hate characterizing anything as ‘hipster’, but FKR.TV is clearly a channel with hipster taste, complete with mumblecore-esque comedy and a satirical take on the art and music worlds. If that sounds like your thing, you’ll be happy to hear that FKR.TV will also allow you to discover some cool new bands to share with your friends.
