ShayCarl celebrated his 33rd birthday on March 6th. That date is also his daily vlog birthday, as he has released at least one video every single day for the last four years. In his latest effort, Shay explains to his viewers that year five will be the end of his ironman streak. This time next year, he will scale back his vlogging efforts and will only release a few videos each week.
Shay’s incredible dedication to uploading (he has now uploaded a vlog 1,460 days in a row) has allowed his popularity to explode. He notes how his first daily vlogs were averaging around 10,000 views an episode; he now has more than 563 million channel views on Shaytards alone. If you add in his secondary ShayCarl channel, the view count approaches 700 million. When his streak is over, he’ll have published a vlog for 1,825 consecutive days. Not quite Cal Ripken, but then again, Cal had half as many kids to take care of.
Shay is a busy man. In addition to his vlogs, he is the co-founder of the burgeoning Maker Studios empire, the guest star in many a YouTube video, and the director of the upcoming documentary, I’m Vlogging Here. Shay explained how he would’ve scaled down his vlog presence this year were he not filming a movie about vlogging. Makes sense to me.
Shay was vague about his 2014 plans, but says “we’ll switch to a three day a week or five day a week [schedule].” He also plans to take a one-month sabbatical from the Internet after his streak ends, but who knows how long he can actually go without logging on. Not even one little tweet, Shay? I’ll believe it when I see it.
