Nerdist has become YouTube’s go-to channel for puppet humor thanks to the Neil’s Puppet Dreams web series and a smattering of one-off collaboration’s with The Henson Foundation’s Muppets. However, a long-awaited series on Geek and Sundry will help Felicia Day’s YouTube Original Channel challenge Nerdist for the title of ‘most puppet friendly channel on the Internet.’
The series is called LearningTown, and it stars Paul & Storm, a notable musical duo whose quirky songs have appeared on Geek and Sundry in the past. The series will, in similar fashion to Neil’s Puppet Dreams, feature a mix of live action and adult-themed puppet humor, as the leading pair attempt to resurrect their favorite TV show.
Paul & Storm’s list of celebrity connections gives us a good idea of the appearances we can expect in LearningTown
: Mike Phirman, a frequent collaborator with Chris Hardwick and Nerdist, appears in the show’s trailer, which makes it seem as if there is just one huge puppet network on YouTube. We also catch a glimpse of Weird Al (also previously involved with Nerdist), and Parry Gripp seems to be involved as well. There are other notables affiliated with the duo who I would love to see pop up in guest spots. The Brothers Chaps? Jonathan Coulton? One can only hope.LearningTown has long been attached to Geek and Sundry and has been in the works for nine months; it will finally debut in mid-January. Looks like The Guild and Space Janitors will have some musical, hand-operated company.
