Startup Laffster Raises Money For Political Satire Video Aggregator

Have you ever wondered where the name Tubefilter comes from? Basically, we’d like to think that we are sifting through the incomprehensible breadth of online videos and picking out the ones that you’ll find interesting. Laffster, an LA-based startup, has a similar agenda. The company’s trademark app acts as a Pandora for online comedy video, recommending content to users based on their preferences. Now, Laffster is expanding its platform by launching Mock the Vote, an app that will act as an aggregator for political satire videos.

Mock the Vote will bring together content from The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, The Onion, Funny or Die, and plenty of other outlets. The app is aimed at people who feel that satirical news shows can act as a replacement for traditional news; according to The Huffington Post, that group includes one third of Americans under 40.

To fund the new endeavor, Laffster has raised $750k in seed money. Chris Williams of Maker Studios

is among the notable investors, so don’t be surprised if political humor from Epic Rap Battles of History and The Gregory Brothers is featured heavily on the Mock The Vote app.

As for the Laffster app itself, the company is working with “humor researchers” to create a comedy genome project similar to the one that Pandora uses for music recommendations. In the meantime, the company’s YouTube channel hosts a selection of its favorite videos, including trailers for comedy movies, an assortment of funny scenes from shows and films, selected standup, and a collection of a few notable sketches from around the Internet.

In conclusion, if you find yourself hopping around from site to site as you search for your favorite election season videos, YouTube’s politics hub is no longer your only option: Mock the Vote can be downloaded from Laffster’s website.
