Jay Smooth of Ill Doctrine Signs with a Giant

The worst thing about Jay Smooth is the dude doesn’t make enough videos.

The born and bred Harlemite and Upper West Sider, mastermind behind HipHopMusic.com, and “founder of New York’s longest running hip hop radio show, WBAI’s Underground Railroad” (which has blasted beats of extremely talented and underexposed artists over the airwaves since 1991) has delivered sporadic cultural and political criticisms and eloquent observations on the human condition under the banner of Ill Doctrine by way of his webcam since June 2007.

But whether it’s that the guy’s simply very busy or it’s the little hater inside, Smooth hasn’t been able to nail a consistent release schedule since his original web series debut. Hopefully that will change with his new relationship with Giant Magazine.

Smooth recently teamed up with the “smart celebrity, style, and culture” publication to produce a what seems to be monthly series based on his already crowd pleasing, socially conscious, overexposed editorials addressed directly to the camera.

In The Giant Word, Smooth investigates peculiar buzzwords, phrases, and tactics used in the political arena.

Here’s hoping taking a closer look at things like sensitivity and Christine O’Donnell on a regular basis for Giant (and the occasional shoutout from Rachel Maddow) inspire Smooth to keep up that online video output. His fans and politically oriented people at large would like it.
