Ridley Scott, YouTube’s ‘Life in a Day’ is 100% Fresh

A preview of Prometheus – producer and director Ridley Scott’s first foray into science fiction in 25 years – is exploding space helmets at the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con. When the Alien prequel hits silver screens in June 2012, it should make a nice contrast to Scott’s non-fiction, Earthbound documentary that’s soon to be his latest theatrical release.

Life in a Day debuts in 90 select cities this weekend on July 24, exactly one year after the film’s producer (Scott), director (Kevin Macdonald), and YouTube solicited video submissions of ephemeral, transient, and profound happenings from human beings around the globe. Some 80,000 individuals from 192 countries uploaded clips capturing the mundane and the meaningful of July 24, 2010. Macdonald and company pared that number down to a final tally of exactly 1,025 clips that, strung together, constitute the final feature film.

National Geographic Films picked up the rights to Life in a Day and may be distributing the flick to a theatre near you (check the Life in a Day YouTube channel for a list of all the cities and venues where the movie is playing, along with the release dates).

If you didn’t catch the film at Sundance or see its simultaneous premiere on YouTube and it’s playing anywhere in your neck of the woods, you should see it. It’s supposed to be great and a current rating of 100% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes can’t be wrong.
