Webby Awards Announces 2008 Honorees and Nominees

A day after the Old Print Newspaper Guard honored its esteemed, new media released a list of its elite.

The Webby Awards today announced the Honorees (not up for any awards, but the Webby’s liked them enough to shout ’em out), Nominees (up for awards and the winners will be selected by panel of industry judges), and People’s Voice possibilities (a popularity contest where judges selected finalists and now said finalists get to spam their e-mail lists to try to get as many votes as possible to win) for its 12th annual awards ceremony.  The International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences 550some judges narrowed down over a reported 10,000 entries in 100+ categories to an esteemed few hundred.

(Aside: The average registration fee across all categories – Website/Mobile, Interactive Advertising, and Online Film & Video

– is somewhere around $230.  Multiply that by 10K entries, consider the low infrastructure costs, and you’re left with a pretty, pretty, pretty good business.)

You can sign up to vote for the People’s Voice winners from now until May 1st.  Official winners for everything will be announced May 6th and honored at two fancypants ceremonies in New York City on June 9th and 10th – where they’ll give their five-word-maximum acceptance speeches – as part of Internet Week.

The Ninja accepts his 2007 Webby and says to hell with the world-limit

Honestly, all the nominees are fantastic, but some online video notables include It’s Jerry Time (Animation), Hometown Baghdad (Editing, News & Politics Series, Public Service & Activism, Reality), Where are the Joneses? (Writing, which is awesome, because its writing was based of a wiki) You Suck at Photoshop (Comedy Series, How-to/DIY), ThreadbangerVBS.tv (How-To/DIY), and (Travel).
