Instagram turns creator-led channels into two-way streets

Instagram is bringing more interactivity to its Broadcast Channels. Within that bulletin board-style format, creators will now be able to share Prompts with their followers and solicit Replies from those fans.

Those new features are now live on Broadcast Channels, which Instagram introduced in February 2023 as a “one-to-many messaging tool for creators.” Broadcast Channels can consolidate updates, behind-the-scenes content, and images, and that has made them quite popular. Instagram noted that its creator and fan communities now exchange more than 1.5 billion messages per month.

Prompts and Replies will encourage further discussions. Once turned on, Replies will be nested within posts on Broadcast Channels. Prompts can offer everything from restaurant recommendations to product feedback, and Instagram is advising users to track like counts on prompt responses to receive precise insights about fan preferences.

The souped-up Broadcast Channels give Instagram a product that can answer YouTube’s Community Tab, which has grown considerably since its 2021 debut. YouTube’s installation of new features within the Community Tab has made formats like quizzes and polls into vital tools

for its creator community.

Most new Instagram products can be characterized as responses to similar features on other platforms. After all, the Meta-owned hub is infamous for copying other platforms’ products (and sometimes improving them in the process).

But the latest updates to Broadcast Channels also align with Instagram’s ambitions in the AI space. The 14-year-old app is looking to create chatbots that are inspired by and modeled on specific creators. The idea is that the human creators could use those bots to automate time-consuming fan interactions. As Instagram launches more ways to connect with fans, those AI-generated secretaries will see their potential value skyrocket.

Creators who are eager to test out Prompts and Replies will need to do so on Instagram. Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp also support broadcast channels, but the new features are not yet available on those platforms.
