ByteDance’s CapCut hits 200 million active users

ByteDance‘s CapCut video editing app has reportedly hit 200 million monthly active users.

According to a story from Chinese outlet Baijing (as reported by TechNode), Chinese app analysts Diandian and Data.ai both saw that CapCut had more than 200 million monthly active users in January 2023.

If that’s accurate, it means CapCut is ByteDance’s third app to hit over 100 million active users. The first was Douyin, TikTok‘s China-only sister app, and the second, of course, was TikTok itself.

Per TechNode, ByteDance has grown CapCut’s user base through in-app promotions on Douyin, including one that offered CapCut’s editing tools for free for two years.

Diandian and

Data.ai also reported CapCut brought in global revenue of $800,000 in January, but that’s not confirmed. What we do know is that CapCut started charging for a “pro” version in September 2022 that has premium editing features and cloud storage. Pro costs $9.99 if people buy a single month, $7.99 for a month-to-month subscription, and $74.99 for a full year (paid ahead).

This news comes as TikTok is facing ever-increasing scrutiny from U.S. lawmakers. CapCut–which is available in the U.S.–does not seem to have faced the same scrutiny, but if any legislation is successfully passed to ban TikTok, CapCut may end up in hot water, too.
