YouTube is closing out the year with a 24-hour live stream starring Lofi Girl.
Lofi Girl is the animated emblem of long-running music live stream lofi hip hop radio — beats to relax/study to. Operated by the Lofi Girl channel and record label (formerly called ChilledCow), the stream has—apart from a couple of brief interruptions—been broadcasting a constant rota of lo-fi songs since 2017.
Lofi Girl is the stream’s visual component: an anime-style girl writing at her desk, with her cat sitting in a window behind her. Her surroundings often change depending on the time of year. Right now, for instance, she’s wearing a scarf and Santa hat, her room is decorated with a mini Christmas tree and baubles, and outside her window, it’s snowing.

During YouTube’s stream, called ESCAPE2021, viewers will be called on to help Lofi Girl “take a well-deserved break from her room and studies,” YouTube says.
Doing so will involve undergoing a series of narrative challenges related to 2021 trends. Viewers will respond to polls, answer trivia questions, and more.
If they successfully manage to get through all the challenges, they will “unlock an exclusive performance from a surprise musical guest,” per YouTube.
That secret guest isn’t the only one who’ll stop by during ESCAPE2021. It’ll also feature a number of musicians, celebrities, and YouTubers, including BTS, Mark Rober, Harry Mack, Doja Cat, Hydraulic Press Channel, SeanDoesMagic, Dan Rhodes, Masked Wolf, Jelle’s Marble Runs, AyChristineGames, Muselk, and Samay Raina.
More guests are yet to be announced.
ESCAPE2021 will air Dec. 16 on YouTube’s own channel.
