Beginning today, YouTube Kids is available on Amazon’s smart TV platform, Amazon Fire TV.
The kid-friendly app arrives after something of a checkered history between Google-owned YouTube and Amazon. In 2017, Google pulled the flagship YouTube app from Fire TV, citing a lack of reciprocity, given that Amazon Prime wasn’t carrying Google products like Chromecast, Google Home, and Nest. Following negotiations, YouTube returned to Fire TV roughly four months later.
Other apps followed suit. YouTube’s live linear service, YouTube TV, arrived on Fire TV last September, Techcrunch notes, and YouTube Kids — which was initially slated to launch on Fire TV in 2019 — is finally here after a significant delay.
In addition to Fire TV, YouTube Kids — which was seeing a huge surge in viewership at the onslaught of the coronavirus pandemic — launched on Apple TV in May, and is also available on Samsung and Sony smart TVs, as well as Android TV. It is yet to be available on Roku.
