James Charles’ next project will pit six micro beauty influencers against one another in YouTube’s first original competition series.
The four-part series (working title: James Charles Instant Influencer) is currently casting “the best of the best micro influencers to compete in real challenges that will test not only their makeup skills, but everything it takes to be an influencer,” Charles, who has 16.3M subscribers and nets around 50M views per month, said in his latest YouTube upload. The budding beauty guru who comes out on top will take home a prize package that includes a $50K cash reward.
“James Charles is a leader in the industry when it comes to pushing boundaries with creative content,” Susanne Daniels, YouTube’s global head of original content, said in a statement. “We are thrilled that James is bringing his energy and talent to our YouTube Originals slate with our first beauty competition series.”
Folks interested in participating as a contestant must meet a handful of requirements — and must do it fast. They have to be: over 18, a legal resident of the U.S., and have an active YouTube channel (with “active” meaning they’ve produced at least six videos in the last three months). They also must “demonstrate strong expertise in the beauty space and a passion for educating and inspiring others.”
How will they display that expertise and passion? By filming and uploading a new “get ready with me” video to their YouTube channel by Nov. 21. Once they’ve uploaded the video (and tagged it #jamescharlescasting), they can submit their full application package on jamescharlescasting.com.
Contestants’ applications will be examined by Charles, and if an applicant ends up getting onto the show, their work in challenges will be judged by him and a panel of expert, to-be-announced celebrity guest judges, including other major influencers.
The series, set for production by YouTube and Brian Graden Media (the producer of Joey Graceffa’s long-running YouTube original series Escape the Night), will premiere sometime next year, with one episode dropping per week on Charles’ channel.
